"The Interview"

I received quite a few questions around "the interview process." If you receive an interview to join an organization, chances are your packet was complete, and congrats are in order because you made it to the next step! People that do NOT receive an interview typically have an incomplete packet and are not granted an interview.

Timing
Once you have completed your interview, the waiting begins....Depending on the chapter, the wait can be very VERY long! This can be due to how many people the chapter needs to interview, the voting process, and verifying other qualifications (such as letter of recommendations from community service, and LOR from an active member (for example for Delta you have to you are required to provide a letter of rec from a financial member).

I have seen cases where the interview process ALONE can take up to TWO weeks, and after each interview is completed, the verification process begins. So if you have interviewed for a fraternity and/or sorority and haven't heard anything, don't freak out! Chances are they are still going through the motions of verifying info, still interviewing prospective members, get approval from the regional director, etc...

After the interview, I would recommend that you keep yourself busy oppose to stressing out about getting chosen. You will end up pulling your hair out if you don't.

Most chapters will inform you in a form of a letter if you you were not chosen for membership.

  1. If you are accepted, does the chapter call or send you an acceptance letter.

    ReplyDelete
  2. If you are accepted in the organization, generally you will receive a phone call. (This is of course after you interview). If you were NOT accepted then you will receive a letter in the mail.

  3. Does each organization actually call each community service organization to verify your community service or does the letter serve as verification that you performed community service?

  4. How long does the interview last? I was called for one and I'm very nervous about it! What are the usual questions they ask and how many people will be in the room? Will it be ok if i gave the people interviewing me thank you cards afterwards or would that make me appear more anxious?

    Thanks!

  5. Wow. Its amazing how many people are going through the same thing. This post is very helpful. I myself am going through the same thing. One of my mentors is a member of the organization same chapter and everything that I applied too and she was telling me the same thing. Lol. She told me that it takes time and not too worry. Now I'm just taking it day by day waiting on a call...

  6. The packet that you discussed, does it have to be printed from the internet or is it made available by the chapter. Also how will you be contacted to get an interview?

    ReplyDelete
  7. What questions do you recommend to look at and review to be prepared for the interview?

    ReplyDelete
  8. When you attend the Rush event they will tell you everything you need to know in regards to how to turn the packet in.

  9. I have a question, what if you get pick for an interview for an organization, but had all of the qualifications such as gpa, community service, active in other organizations on campus, etc. But did not get a phone call or a letter? What if you were a graduating?

    1. Me too. I had an interview on February 25th with the chapter on my campus, I thought I knew all I could to know, and was tripped up at my interview. As of March 20th, I have not yet received a phone call as to whether or not I've been accepted and when my money is due. Have you heard anything yet?

  14. I was always torn between Delta and another organization. My friend then went to our other friend telling her I am undecided, who is a Delta, on what I want to be. I am now nervous and want to give up on pursuing intrest interest in the organization because I do not want to look like a flip flopper, even though I didn't make any final commitment. Should I continue or just give up.

I have wanted this for the longest and there is nothing I would love more than to be able to serve beside my mother and aunts as their Soror. I am incredibly nervous about the interview and I do hope that it goes well. Good luck to all those hoping to join the Greekdom as well.

    1. There should be a posting on campus when a rush will be held. Not all chapters will be having a rush

      Delete
    2. By attending events some chapters will tell you they have a rush coming up so to be on the lookout. Usually a flyer will go up somewhere around the school as well

      Delete
    3. There may be a flier posted around campus
Check to see if that chapter has a website
Don't ask any member about when they are having rush - that is a big no no. However you should try and get to know the members on the campus - if they don't know u - why would they choose you. Attend their events - if they host a community service project - go
Your interest in any org should be your business- discretion is key - everyone doesn't need to know about what you are trying to do - if you have one or two close friends that want to do it as well its ok to discuss things amongst yourselves- but keep it between yall -

I am not a member of any org - but I have been aspiring to be one for years - and I have learned alot over the course of those years. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there - the founders of these orgs were movers and shakers - we need to live up to that

      Delete
    4. The chapter normally post flyers around school when there is a rush week coming up. Or you could contact someone in your greek department to inquire about it.

    2. I received a rejection letter. I would be lying if I said I wasn't hurt, upset, mad, sad, confused, I just couldn't understand what happened. I had been volunteering with two different committees within the organization. I have been volunteering with the local chapter's race committee for about 8 years, and Delta Academy for about 3. I had just received my MBA and finished with a 3.40 GPA. I had gone to just about all the events, I did community service outside the organization. I just KNEW that I was a sure in this time. I say all of that to say, make sure your packes are ON POINT. Ask the Delta that is writing your letter for you to go over your packet with you. I was denied because of my service letter. They were looking for a letter from a nonprofit organization, and I just was not thinking of that. Did I think about giving up, sure did. But a member of the local chapter reached out to me and asked me to keep pursuing. She asked me to keep volunteering with them, and that I had other members in my corner pulling for me. I don't know when they will decided to take on new members again, but I will be there waiting. Like a member told me, if this is something that you TRULY want - you will never give up on your dream.

    3. You have NO idea how much your post just helped me!! I was rejected 9 years ago for insufficient LOR's and had NO idea why. After reading your post I now know what happened. My GOD! Thank you, for your transparency and sharing your thoughts with us. Best of luck to you in your pursuit.

    4. I was rejected earlier this year for insufficient LOR's. When I spoke with the President, she informed me my letter did not have the exact wording to specify the required hours were equivalent to at least 15 hours per quarter over the course of the past two years. My letter included a breakdown of hours that were in excess but this exact wording was not included. She encouraged me to try again, however they had nothad a line in 13 years prior to this year. I pray I will have another opportunity before I'm too old :-)

  19. How long does it take on average to receive a interview call after you've submitted your packet?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Honestly, it all depends on how many people apply, as well as how many people are on the membership committee . The chapter that I applied too had over 300 women attend the rush. Granted this was for alumnae chapter, but just keep that in mind. It could take up to two weeks - or it could be 3-4 days.

    2. When I went through the interview process during undergrad, it took me 3 days to receive an interview call after the packet submission deadline. For grad chapter, it took 5 days.

  28. Currently on my campus, the sorority that I've waited basically my whole life to join (18 years) has decided not to have a rush this semester. My fingers are crossed that they will have one this coming fall. My question is for legacies. Does being a legacy give you an advantage in the selection process??? I'm asking because when I attended a Greek 101 event there were so MANY legacies trying to get into the same sorority as me because my schools chapter just recently came back from a five year suspension. I'm trying not to get my hopes up if there are an overwhelming number of legacies...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It depends on the organization you are apply to. My cousin is an AKA and their legacies are pretty much guaranteed a spot as long as the person who is their legacy have been active for the past two years. There was one time when there was over 300 at the rush, the school had a cap of 100, and they had to accept 90 legacies. That meant that only 10 people had a chance of getting voted upon. She made it since she was a legacy, and they didn't have to vote on her, however her roommate did not.

  42. I made a post a while back saying that I had been trying for 11 years and was waiting on my call for an interview but rec'd a rejection letter because my packet was incomplete. This was my third time trying (once in undergrad and twice at the alumnae level), and I thought that ai was done. Thought that maybe this just wasn't in the cards for me. However, there was a glitch in the matrix. I rec'd a call saying that everyone had rec'd a rejection letter. Something happened after the chapter held interviews that led them to reject all prospects. So, because of that they will try again in the fall!!! This gives me yet another chance!!! I feel sorry for the ones that were granted an interview, however, I KNOW how hard I've worked for this org. Not just work to become a member, but actually putting in work by volunteering with them. I am just so happy that I may have another chance at it later this year.

I checked, rechecked, and even had my letter writer check my packet before submitting it this time. I also had a different letter writer. I used to ask my sister's bff to write my letter of recommendation, this time I asked a member of the local chapter. I passed the first phase and was granted an interview!!! I interviewed on Dec. 17th, now I'm just waiting. The wait period is a beast!! I'm pretty sure it's going to be a couple of weeks before they make any decisions due to the holidays and all. Hopefully I will be able to come back on here to tell you all I was accepted. Good Luck to all who are pursuing membership into the org of their choice!! Happy Holidays!

I'm not sure what happened the last time around - I mean I've heard stories - but only those involved knows what truly happened. But those that interviewed the last time around felt that they should have automatically made it to the interview process this time around - but - I think there were some applicants supplying false information and thats how they were able to get an interview. So this time the org stopped everything and made everyone apply again.

  53. I submitted my application on 12/30 and I’m waiting patiently to see if I’m granted an interview. Any other ladies attended a DST RUSH with Application deadline of 12/30? Any news yet?

    1. So you submitted your application the same day as the deadline? How did you submit it? I had to mail my in and even paid to have it shipped out the very next day by 12pm. Just asking cause the Rush I attended made it very clear that if that packet was not received (in their PO box by 5pm that day) then you would not be eligible for consideration. Good luck to you though!!

    2. My packet arrived on 12/30. I sent it certified mail so I could track it.

    3. I did attend a rush on 12/9 and the deadline was 12/30. I submitted my application on 12/23. Still no call for an interview. I would be lying if i said I wasn't anxious. Hopefully/ playfully soon.

  54. I attended RUSH on 12/9. Applications were due 12/30. It is 01/7 and haven’t received a call for an interview. Should I be concerned? Do they review apps as they come in or do they wait until the deadline to review them all? I know it was the holidays but they had an anticipated start date of January so I would expect there to be a quick turn around. I guess I can use this as an opportunity to practice patience. This wait is killing me.

    1. I did as well and just received a call for an interview. It probably takes time with so may applicants so hopefully your interview call is coming soon. I think its a requirement to wait until the deadline before reviewing any of the applications (for fairness purposes) and to have an opportunity for additional materials such as transcripts to arrive and be added to your packet.

I expected that calls would be made after the deadline date but I was also informed that calls are typically made in aplha order and my last name starts with "B". Anyone else in my shoes?? 1. Not sure if we are in pursuit of the same chapter but I’m still waiting... everyone else I know who submitted are still waiting as well. Over 900 people attended the RUSH at a high school and they received a lot of applications I heard. You’re at beginning and I’m at the very end of alphabet soooo my wait will be longer than yours :(. I hope we get a call soon.

    2. Wow that is A LOT of people!! That makes it more challenging with that many applications to process. Well I hope we hear something soon! Best of luck.

I figured calls would be made after the deadline but I am quite nervous, waiting to get that call to interview. I was informed calls are typically made in alpha order but that makes me more nervous as my last name starts with the second letter of the alphabet. Anyone else in my shoes?? 2. Well an update, I unfortunately was not able to move forward in the process. i received my letter this evening. My residency requirement was not met (lived in the area for almost 2 years) but the documentation that was requested in the packet could not be provided as no bills/deed to the house are not in my name husband pays for everything. I provided what I thought would be acceptable and what was recommended but no. So I am disappointed but not broken. I will continue my pursuit. I wish you all the best of luck in your journey.

      Delete
    3. I am somewhat in the same boat. So what did you turn in for residency? If you dont mind me asking?

      Delete
    4. @anonymous Jan 19 12:40
If I were you I would 1. Reach out to the contact person to see if what you’re considering would be valid and 2. Not deviate from the provided proof of residency that they ask for. It may be uncomfortable to reach out, but better to be sure than to guess incorrectly.

      Good luck!!!!!

    5. No prob. It was advised that I submit vehicle registration as it has my current address, I provided a copy of my insurance with my address and a print out of my voter registration as I did not have the card. I also provided a written statement of the documents I submitted and why I was submitting them. Honestly, this was a bit difficult for me to receive that letter because it was the simplest thing, yet it proved to be more challenging. I could have accepted the denial a bit better if I truly did not live in the are for the required amount of time but its all good. I just hope there is another line with the other major Chapter in my area but they have not had a line in years and I've lived here for almost 10; so not knowing when the next opportunity will present itself is upsetting.

      Delete
    6. Prior to me completing my packet, I did reach out to the contact person for the Chapter, and I was told that vehicle registration would be acceptable and to send whatever I believed would establish my residency. So for me that was the registration, car insurance and some other document that I cant recall right now. So I thought of course, there would be no issue but from what I was told from a friend who is apart of another chapter; they are looking for reasons to screen out, especially with a large line. But I know what I need to do for next time.

  71. Hello,

My college is doing a rush this semester. They have no had a active line since 2011. Therefore I do not know any Deltas. What should I do as far as letters of recommendations?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good question. And if you don't know any active members how do you get LOR? The invitation is this weekend. Signed Ball of nerves.

      Delete
    2. Honestly, it would very difficult for you then. You HAVE to have that Delta letter. And ppl aren't willing to write them for people they don't know. It would also be rude to ask someone you don't know. It would've been great if you were volunteering with the local chapter or even at another school.

      Delete
    3. If you don't know anyone to write your letter of LOR you need to get out there and do more community service. Deltas are everywhere in terms of serving the community. I tell people all the time as soon as you realize you want to members of an org, you need to get out there and start meeting and getting to know its members so when the time comes, you won't have to worry about it.

  72. This was helpful. I finished my packet and now I'm just waiting on my Delta Auntie (don't worry...she's not my real aunt) for her LOR. Can't wait for my interview!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Each organization requirement is different, so it depends. (Some require it, some do not). They will let you know at the rush and if they do not, that is a definitely a question to ask during the Q&A section.

  78. Do some chapters not send out rejection letters? I see some ladies have not received a letter or call after several weeks and it’s safe to assume that they were not chosen. I’m not saying 3 weeks but some are waiting 6 weeks, i believe by now they’ve voted and started process. Is it standard that all people not chosen get a letter or you just hear you don’t make it through the grapevine? I was under the impression they voted within the a day or two after interviews? I’m super curious because I know my nerves are bad and I don’t want to be sad waiting on a rejection that will never come via mail.

    1. I would think they the chapter would send a letter to those granted an interview. Letters were sent to those who turned in packets, but not selected to interview. I am not 100% positive but if the chapter sent letters to those applicants hopefully they would send letters to those who did interview.

      Delete
    2. I wanted to know the same thing. A friend of mine received a letter stating her packet was incomplete I just figured they would do the same for people who didn't make it. 6 weeks is very long and at this point do you continue to wait or move on.

    3. I am still hopeful.
