OMG, How do I Prepare for Rush???

Preparing for Rush can be exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. What do I wear? Do I show up early? Do I ask a lot of questions? How do I stand out? Will they like me? The list of questions go on, and on and on, and on....

First off, take a huge breath. You have prepared for this. You've done your research. You realized that this was the PERFECT organization for you. The first thing you want to do is make sure you double, and triple check the location and time of where the event will be held. I have received phone calls form girls crying because they wrote down the wrong date, wrong time, etc... and asking if there is anything they can do. The answer? Nothing other than try again. You can not be granted an interview UNLESS you attend rush/informational. It is essential that you complete this step if you want to be considered for membership.

The next step is finding something to wear. I would strongly recommend that you stay away from the orgs colors, and other sorority/fraternity colors. Wearing Pink to and AKA Rush is a no no,, and wearing blue to a Delta Rush is also not a wise thing to do. Black is ALWAYS a great color or neutral colors. I remember when I attended Rush for Delta, I wore cream and brown. You want to make sure you treat Rush as a job interview. Stay away from loud colors, loud perfumes/cologne, and costume jewelry. You are representing yourself, so you want to be as clean-cut and chic as possible. Light makeup for the ladies, and men if you have worn earrings or have tattoos, I would suggest that you take them out, or make sure they are covered. Have mints available *you just never know*

"To be on time, is to be late" Please keep this in mind when attending Rush. I was the first one there at my rush. This gave me a clear advantage to speak to all of the members, choose a seat and more importantly stand out. So how early am I speaking? Around 20 mins before the Rush begins. Showing up on time can include not getting a seat, or sitting way in the back of the room.

If you are late, then I would suggest not to attend at all, UNLESS you made previous arrangements with the president, or the member in charge of the rush. (This could be due to a class conflict, etc.) In most cases, the organization WILL lock the doors after Rush begins.

While attending rush, ask questions participate in the games, and show that you are interested in the organization. In some cases, there will be a time set aside where you can chat with some of its members, and this would be a great time for you to become noticed.

Some organizations will offer you an application at the end of the rush for those who qualify for membership. I will only take an application IF you qualify. There is no need for you to take an app. If you KNOW, you don't have the community service hours, the minimal GPA, and the letter of recommendation needed for membership.

In conclusion, I would say to listen attentively, look sharp, ask questions, stand out, smile, and be approachable at the rush. You want to make sure you make all of the required deadlines that are stressed at Rush (Application/packet deadlines, etc..) If possible, I would also suggest speaking to as many of the members as possible. Remember for most organizations you will need the majority vote to be invited for membership.

    1. INFORMATIONal is used to inform. It's a good way to find out more about a certain organization before choosing which one you would like to pursue. Some people suggest going to all sorority informationals to get a better understanding of each before you choose. These can happen at any time during the school year.

When a chapter decides that they want to bring in new members (i.e. MIP), they hold an official RUSH meeting. At the RUSH meeting, you will get more information about the sorority, information about the requirements to apply for membership, the new member cost, and receive your application.

  2. Yes, they are the same thing...Some schools refer to them as an "Informational", while others simply called them "A Rush"

  6. @ Anon...It really depends on the chapter....Each chapter is different and there a lot of things that have to happen behind the scenes before you will know. Patience is key!

  7. I also want to thank you for creating this blog. I became familiar with you on Yahoo answers and have your advice to be very informative and helpful. As an aspirant I appreciate your taking the time out to share such good information and assist others in their quest.

One question that I've always wondered about is the infamous "packet." Many people say make sure your packet is tight. My question is should all of the require recommendation/community service letters be included with the application (meaning we collect them and send it all together) or are those sent separately by the individual or organization?

    1. No, you do not have to seek membership, you can attend an informational to get the information about the organization.

  9. agreeing with the question above---> I was told that it is not wise to attend an informational of another organization unless you were completely sure. how can you be completely sure without attending?

also, I know of some girls who recently crossed a sorority in NC and talked about some of the things they had to endure -- chants etc. that were not exactly in line with their christian values...but they did it anyway. how do you deal with this? do you just compromise for the moment? you seem to be very religious-so was this probably exclusive to the line? or are these just rumors/scare tactics?

    1. My question for you is why do you feel like you must express your interest to another member? I would first gain as much insight and knowledge from the first two women you expressed interest to then work on the requirements of being apart of the sorority the more you are involved in your community the more you can network and trust me you will find many members who work in the community.

This semester, I took up 12 credits to get comfortable and back on my feet but had an unexpected surgery in which I had to drop one of my classes. Because I have to withdraw, I will still be paying for the credits. My question is, will these withdrawals on my transcript affect my opportunity? I know the chapter is interested in me as of now but I am afraid my home circumstances which caused me to withdraw from classes may affect my chances. I have a QPA of 3.02, strong community service resume, and many leadership positions. The class that I withdrew this semester was a gen ed (unrequired) course. I am very nervous that this may affect my chance. Please let me know what you think or what I can do!

    1. There is no magic number. Alumni chapters have intake when they deem it necessary (if membership dwindles or if they are running out of active members). I have heard of grad chapters having intake approximately once every 8-10 years... Do not wait until the chapter posts Rush info to attend and support their events. Reach out now in the mean time and network with them so that they get to know you.

    2. Follow the chapter on social media. 9 times out of 10, social media is where they are posting their upcoming events, not the chapter website. I found this out the hard way, while standing in line at Rush. Many of the ladies had been attending the chapter events for months. I asked them how they found out about them, and they all said Facebook **slaps forehead** lol

  78. I read that you have to join the alumnae chapter in the city that you reside in. I am finding this to be problematic because the chapter's calendar is blank as it relates to open, public events. The only thing they have listed are monthly meetings. How are you to come in contact with members and show interest if the chapters are not active in the community. I want to be a part of more community and volunteering projects but if the chapter does nothing, what would be the allure of joining?? Are you able to join another city's chapter if the one you live in is not as active as a neighboring city?

    1. Try searching for them on FB or other social media where they may broadcast events. If all else fails, reach out via email and let them know you are interested in attending some of their events.

  79. how much money does it cost to be at Delta? Did you have to pay it all at one time?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Until you have attended a RUSH event, you do not need to know that. I will say, however, some chapters will make you pay it all at once while others may be willing to allow payment arrangements.. But these are things to discuss at RUSH.

      Delete
    2. It depends on the chapter and whether is it is collegiate or Alumnae. They will let you know at Rush, it has to be paid within 24 hours of notification of acceptance.

  80. Do you have to be invited to RUSH? I'm just not sure how exactly I would know WHEN and where it would be held if the chapter at my school doesn't post it on social media.

  87. I have Rush coming up the first week in January 2018 and after reading the post and some responses, I must say I am a little less nervous and more anxious to see how this experience is going to go for me. I have been waiting soooooo long for this moment!

    16. Yes, interviews were this weekend. :-) I got mine and I was so excited! So did many people!! I was nervous, but it all went away. Interviews only mean packets were complete, and some were not. I'm praying for that next call! Best of luck to everyone as well.

    17. Yea, I got an interview too. Now, just waiting on the next step. I wonder how many women received interviews. Anyone know?

      Delete
    18. I don't know how many people were interviewed but you can safely assume there were a lot. In my opinion, this is the toughest time. The Wait! Good luck to all that applied. Based on yout comments it has been at least a week. Keep us posted please!

      Delete
    19. Yes, the waiting is definitely the hardest part. Hopefully, we will be one of the 95 women chosen.

      Delete
    20. If they hit that 95 cap, that would be great! I doubt they'll go that high, but it's always possible! I'm guessing 65-75, but even those are great odds because there weren't 200 interviews. The numbers I've heard have all been less than 200 (and less than 150), but no confirmation. I hope we will be of the chosen! 95 or otherwise! :-) We were all definitely at the same RUSH! Some commenters are saying 1000 people at RUSH with a cap of 50 and that isn't the case here, which is GREAT!

      Delete
    21. Curious, did any of you all make it? Or are you still in the "waiting phase" after interviewing with the chapter?

      Delete
    22. Just in the waiting phase. Had our interviews and now just waiting to see if we get the "call."

      Delete
    23. Yes, I was hearing too it was about 120 girls they interviewed and no where near the 300 plus girls that were rush. I hope it isn't just 65 or so! Take as many as they can. Fingers crossed!

    24. Officially two weeks since my interviews! I hope we hear something in the next couple of days.

  99. So I attended rush and did everything I was supposed to, after 3 weeks of stressing and waiting, I got a letter stating that my application was incomplete when I know it was (I checked over everything 5 times before I sealed it to be mailed). I know it was a small chance because over 1000 girls came to rush and the max size for a line was 50, but I am just hurt that I was not even considered when I met and exceeded most requirements.

    Replies
    1. I am truly sorry that you were not selected however as a member of a divine sorority I will say this. Of your application was incomplete then trust that is was incomplete. At our Rush we told our prospective members to fill everything out and if it does not apply to put "N/A" All applications go to our Regional team and if they see where you were rejected for an incomplete application and it was indeed complete they would make the chapter go back and interview you. Hope you try again.

      Delete
    2. Did you make a copy for yourself? If so, I would check it. It could have been as small as if you didn't include every single page of the application in the packet, didn't initial a page, or didn't sign.

      Delete
    3. I was going to suggest the same thing. When I was rejected to having an incomplete application, I went back to look at my application and couldn't find what I did wrong. (I made a copy). I gave it to a friend of mind and she found what I missed. I was crushed. I wish I would have allowed her to check it BEFORE submitting it, but was trying to use discretion. Well that cost me an interview. I will be trying again.

      Delete
    4. I agree with the above posters--check your copy and have a friend (member) check. I had my letter writer and another member check my application. It's not enough for just our eyes. It really can come down to writing "N/A," an initial, or not including all of the pages of the document, instead of just the signature pages.

      Delete
    5. Just want to add, I know someone whose writer didn't date the LOR and that made it incomplete.
