Ring, Why don't you,,,,,,RING!!!!!!

You Attended Rush
You Submitted Your Packet
You had your Interview
And now......you wait, And Wait,
AND WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This part of the process is torture! Every time the phone rings, your heart skips a beat. You double to check to make sure the ringer is turned all the way up on your phone. Back when I was waiting for the phone to ring, I had to make sure the phone was not OFF the hook. My girlfriend and I (who also applied) went to Denny's to grab a bite to eat. We were BOTH nervous as all get out. We both figured, no sense of being nervous on an empty stomach. We ate, talked about being line sisters, laughed, and then rushed home to make sure we wouldn't miss our phone call.

Look, I get it. The waiting period is brutal. A day can seem like a week. A week can seem like a month and two weeks can look like a year.  My advice? Keep yourself active. If you are in undergrad, then study for that test, or put your head in those books.  Go to the gym. Go out with our girlfriends/guy-friends. If you are applying for the alumni/alumnae level, keep yourself occupied with work or your family.  Keep yourself busy, Busy, BUSY! TRUST ME, once you get that phone call that you have been "Chosen" for membership, your time as you know it will be limited. So enjoy the free time while you can.

A constant question that I get often is how long do I have to wait. Well, it depends. How many people were at your rush? Were there a lot of prospects there? Why does this matter? Look at this way. Let's say there were 300 people at the Rush.  Two hundred fifty applied for membership and turned in their application. After going through all of the apps, 225 qualify for an interview. That's a lot of interviews. Once the interviews are over, the members need to narrow it down to prospective members. There are a lot of factors involved, for example, does the organization have a legacy clause?  Does the College /University have a cap/limit of how many prospective members the org can accept? This all takes time. Good luck to all of you, and once you cross into Greek-Land, come back share your story with others. I have also been known to send "Neophyte" gifts to new members, so you NEVER know. :) wink!

  1. I just interviewed on Saturday with the chapter I am interested in. From what I understand, there were about 35 ladies interviewed, but there can only be 8 selected. The waiting period is BRUTAL!! Thank you very much for this blog, as it has given me so much helpful information over the years. Peace and blessings!

    1. I just had my interview on Saturday as well. There were over 300 at my Rush, and I was told roughly 215 that interviewed. I am just curious, how do you now that there can only be 8 selected? I am just wondering how they came up with that number. Good luck to you. It would be great if we both became sands. I also agree, the waiting period is BRUTAL. I am on pins and needles.

    2. At the rush, the number was given to us, as that is their cap. I have forgotten how the number is determined, but they did share that as well. Being there were around 70 at the rush, I think everyone was at ease in the beginning, thinking there would be a selection of maybe 30+ ladies. The usual numbers you might assume for a graduate chapter. You could hear the gasps when the actual cap was stated!

    3. The Rush I attended had slightly over 200 women there and the maximum the Chapter can accept for membership intake is 42. They stated they have to cap the number at 25% of their current membership. There were gasps in that room too.

    4. The rush I went to had about 100 people. They only told us that the number of people selected would be based on chapter size. My friend who works with a member said she was also told 25%. I was also told only 25-30 people made it to interview. I don't know how many they have room for as I don't know the number of chapter members.

    5. The rush I attended had over 600 ladies and they could only take 70 - 80 for the line. That was very intimidating and made me very nervous. But I am blessed and happy to say I got the call!! If this is truly what you desire, it will happen for you. Be blessed.

    6. Wow- 600 people? That is a lot. How much time passed between your interview and receiving the phone call of acceptance? I am guessing more than a month considering they had to interview at least 300 people? (Half) Congratulations!

    7. Congratulations!!! To beat those odds means a lot. I wonder how many made it to an interview. I heard that for the chapter I applied to only about 30% made it to an interview. Good luck on your journey to sisterhood!

    8. Thank you. It was almost 4 weeks between the interview and getting the call.

    9. I was invited to a formal rush and my interview at the same time. Basically i received an email inviting me to a formal rush and included in that email was a time and place for my interview which is actually a day after the rush.

    11. For the person that stated "Still waiting after 3 weeks" did you ever make it? If not did you get a letter of rejection in the mail?

    12. For the rest of you in this thread, did any of you make it? I am on pins and needles waiting, (I had my interview 3 weeks ago) and just curious if any of you made it.

  2. Thank you for this post. It came at the right time. It will be three weeks this Saturday and I haven't heard anything. I have tried to keep myself busy and will continue to do so. If you are not chosen, do they let you know? Is there a letter sent? Is there anyone out there that as rejected before and trying again that can answer this question? Good luck to all of you trying.

  3. I am graduating in May from Undergrad and I would have liked to join while I was in college (and I was close last year but I was not chosen) and at this point I don't think it is going to happen. I am going to attend graduate school starting in the fall. Any advice for joining at the graduate level? Should I try wherever I end up or should I wait until I am more settled somewhere (For more that a year or two)?

    1. I think you should try. Becoming a member of these organizations is really hard since they do not have intake often. There have been cases where they is a 7-10 year GAP between lines. I would suggest that as soon as you graduate, get settled, and start setting the groundwork in getting to know the chapter and its members ASAP.

  4. Today marks 3 weeks since my interview, and I haven't heard a word. I'm starting to wrap my mind around the high probability that I did not make it... again. I've never shared this with anyone, but this would be my 3rd rejection. I feel so heartbroken and outcast. I really feel like I put my best foot forward, advanced degree with a 3.7 GPA, many hours of service, a LOR from a current chapter member, and a great interview. I feel like, if I wasn't good enough this time. I never will be. Sorry to ramble, it just hurts. I'm still holding out a tiny bit of hope, but I know what little window that might be left is closing.

    1. Today only marks 1 week for me in the waiting phase, so I can only imagine how you must be feeling. Please don't give up hope. I know it's easier said than done, but please don't. I know you don't want to hear this, but if now isn't the time, it's because God has other plans for you right now. Just a delay, not a deny. Don't give up on something that I can clearly tell is in your heart. I will keep you in prayer, and for all you know, you may be coming back on this comment section in a few days to tell us about your call!! Wishing you all the best, and everything your heart desires! Blessings to you!

    4. I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't get selected. I know that this must be a tough time for you. I'm not sure if you are undergrad or grad, but don't give up. I read somewhere that maybe it's not you but it's the chapter around you. Maybe you just weren't a great fit for THAT chapter. Things may be different once you start pursuing Alumnae so don't give up. Take some time to heel your wounds and keep being the awesome person you are. It will happen if it's meant to be.

    5. I can't imagine how you are feeling right now, so let me just say that I am sorry. I know you need to time to heal. Getting rejected three times is awful. Were all three times at the Grad level? I agree with the previous poster that maybe the chapter you applied for is NOT the chapter for you. Take all the time you need to grieve, and but don't give up. Best wishes to you, and I truly hope you reconsider one day again. Thanks for updating us with your journey. Hugs!

    6. No, twice in college and once (this most recent time) at grad level. As I'm sure you know, at grad level you can only apply where you live, and I won't be moving anytime soon. We've settled and bought our "grow old together" home...so if the chapter I applied for is not for me, then I might just be out of luck. I'll lick my wounds and re-evaluate to see if its worth trying again after all of the tears and heartache subside. I have a friend who did make it, so I will support her journey and try to be positive about it. Thanks Ms Love for providing a great outlet.

    7. Look at it from this standpoint. You now have a friend who will be on the inside. That's more than I can say for most. She can push for you to make it the next time around. Me and my bff tried out together both for college and for grad. Both of us were denied. Then we tried for grad again. She was denied and I made it. It was tough on both ends. I wanted to celebrate, but didn't want to discredit how she was feeling. She wanted to celebrate me, but was in tears that she didn't make it. You can rest assure that the next time this chapter has an intake, I will be very vocal on making sure she is selected the next time around. I just hate we couldn't do this journey together.

    8. I am reminded of a story of a woman who finally became a member if her chosen sorority after 32 years and 12 rushes. The moral of this story is that if this is something that you REALLY want, don't give up. Let the rejection drive you to try even harder. I know the wound is pretty fresh right now, but in time hopefully you will change your mind about giving up. Best of luck to you!

      Delete
    9. I agree with the poster above. Definitely don't give up especially if you know people that made it in this time. Those "new" members will have voting rights next time so they can push for you.

I also applied with a few friends. One in particular didn't make it b/c she had an error on her application. I haven't told her, or anyone else that applied, that I made it yet because of discretion. However, if they decide to apply again, I will definitely be rooting for them and they won't have to look very far for an active sponsor. (Hopefully it won't take another 10 years though.) However, just keep your head up high. Continue to get to know the ladies of the chapter and learning more about what they do. Your time will come.

      Delete
    10. I also wanted to add that if this is a particular grad sorority since you mentioned "apply where you live", remember that they now have a line cap - XX% of the number of active members. You could have been right at the cut off. I just reread that you had a letter from an active member so you at least knew someone in the chapter. I suggest that if you are really close with her that you ask for some advice on what you can do to have a stronger chance next time.

    11. Pretty sure that the new line, the one that I didn't make, is crossing tonight. I'm really sincerely happy for the ladies that made it, but I can't lie, it really hurts too. I'm just here trying to keep it together.

    12. I'm really sorry that things didn't work out for you. I can imagine the pain you are going through. I had the same several years back when I applied but didn't make it to the end. It hurt so much to see those ladies cross. I cried for days.

  5. I am in the same boat as you. It will be 3 weeks on Thursday since my interview and nothing! This will be my 4th rejection. Twice in college and twice at the alumnae chapter. I am on the verge of tears. I don't know if I have any more in me to go through this again, especially since the chapter here doesn't have lines often. I am grateful for this outlet where I am able to express my feelings. To witness one more line coming out and I am not a part of is more than I can bear. Congrats to all of you that have made it. I am still trying my best to hold on but it's hard. VERY HARD!

  6. You're right, however after 12 years, and 3 rejections already (if I don't get picked, it will be my fourth) it will be hard. I think I have been patient enough since my first rejection 12 years ago. But I will keep the faith. Wishing you the best as well.

  7. I wish that I would have seen this entry earlier. The wait for that call is no joke! Every time the phone rang, my heart definitely skipped a beat. Every day I was scared to check my mail out of fear of a rejection letter. I tried to stay focused on work and other important stuff but it's all I could think about.

This weekend was going to mark 3 weeks since my interview for this grad chapter. I was just about sure that I didn't make it. My sister told me that as long as I haven't received a rejection letter to stay positive. I tried but by the end of the 3 week mark, I gave up. Not to mention that at info meeting, they gave us a date to expect a call by. The date came and passed. I spent the entire next day barely able to function.

Then that night, it happened, I got my call! I am so excited to move forward. Good luck to all waiting ladies. It can be a very long process and wait. Only about 30 people interviewed from what I was told and it still took 3 weeks. Be patient and don't give up until you are told you didn't make it.

  8. On yesterday evening, I finally got the call. I am beyond excited. I was on the verge of giving up since it was well over three weeks. To those who are still waiting, just keep the faith. I have been waiting for this moment for 18 years and it is finally here. When I got off the phone, I cried. Happy tears. Tears of joy, tears of relief, and tears of happiness. I can't believe I am about to start this journey. I am an only child, not married, so the fact that I am about to gain line sisters makes me tear up. My mom died 5 years ago, and my dad died when I was 12 so I consider myself an orphan. Thank you Ms. Love for this blog I have read all of your posts over 5 times and I never gave up.

  11. I got the call, I got the call, I got the call, I got the call! This would have been my fifth, YES 5TH rejection. I tried twice in college and three times in grad. I can't believe it. It seems surreal. When I got my third rejection, I was done. D.O.N.E. DONE! Then I found this blog.....It gave me hope, so I applied again, and then,,,yep, you guessed it, I got rejected. After picking myself up, I went in hard. I went to all of their events, volunteered my services whenever I could. I wanted the chapter members to know me. To know that I was a hard worker. Since my 3 rejection, I have gained a Master's Degree, PhD, husband, and twin girls. Maybe it just wasn't my time. Well now it IS indeed my time. I am in tears as I am typing this out. You have no idea how bad I have wanted this. 20 years!

The number of years that I was pursuing was also in the double digits. I completely agree with you that the feeling of acceptance has been so surreal. My call took 3 weeks but it definitely would depend on the number of interviews they had to do. From what I heard, this chapter did less than 50. I know people from a different chapter that applied a few years back. That took 3.5 weeks and they did many more interviews. So just stay positive and please come back to share when you receive news to help others have an idea of timeline.

  19. Hello, I have been interested in Org ABC since I was a junior in high school. The chapter at my school was on moratorium my first 2 years of college and came out with a line SP16. After doing years of research I expressed my interest with a couple of the new members about a year ago. Months went by and I learned that the new members carry a reputation that I do not want to be associated with, but I really wanted to be apart of that Org so I prayed for my answer and began to research more and realized that my heart is in Org XYZ. Should I express interest in Org XYZ even though I've already expressed it in ABC? I don't want it to seem like I just want to be Greek, but I know for sure that Org ABC isnt the one for me anymore

    ReplyDelete

    1. Here's my best advice for you - Membership in these organizations are a LIFETIME COMMITTMENT. Make sure to research and research which org best fits you, your goals, and what you want to achieve in the community. Based on what you wrote, I assume you will be a senior in the fall? That means that you would be around this particular chapter for at most 1 more year. If this org in general is really want you want, then either just apply now and get through that last year OR don't apply and wait to do so in grad chapter. Don't just apply to ABC org b/c you want to be Greek before you graduate from college. If you are 100% sure that Org ABC is the one that you want to commit to now and in the future, then express interest and move on. There may be some backlash (people can be petty) but do what's right for you.

Like you, I am a shy girl and I found the members at my school very intimidating. I went to an HBCU and although we have all four sororities on campus, two of them are VERY popular. Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Delta Sigma Theta. It appeared that everyone wanted to be a member of one of these two organizations. When I arrived on campus, I took your advise and tried my best to allow the members to get to know me. I volunteered my services, attending all of their events and even became very active in other organizations on campus.

After a year of getting to know them, I finally submitted my application. I was rejected and was crushed. I didn't allow that to affect me since three of my friends were accepted. I tried again the following year and I am happy to report that it was accepted. I am happy to announce that I am an Oh So Pretty Girl of Alllllllpha Kappa Alllllllpha Sorority InnnnnnCorporated. Thank you for creating this blog. It as so helpful to me. What I appreciated most about this blog is, even though you are a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta, you geared your posts where anyone who is interested in joining greek can follow. You are a God sent.

Thanks again my fellow sister-greek, and Skeeeeeeeee-Ooooop!!!!

  21. I applied, interviewed & did my background check for the chapter on the 26th of Sept, there was only 19 girls so I figured it would be quicker than normal. it's now Oct 7th and I haven't heard from anybody.. should I be worried?

    1. I suggest against contacting anyone to see if your files made it to the office or what have you. Everyone has to go through this waiting period. The number of people may or may not matter. There may already be a schedule in place that says Notify applicants on this date. Money is paid on this date, etc. Do not start to worry until you receive a rejection letter. You never know what's going on behind the scenes.

After reading this blog since I came in as a undergraduate 4 years ago the chapter I've wanted to join is finally coming back to my campus and I have been offered membership in the number one sorority, DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY,INC. !!!!! Can't believe this is finally happening, its so surreal! Thank you Mrs. Love for constantly making women like me still push for such a honor!

I can tell you that already I have loved every minute of being a Delta and that they mean it when they say you have to WORK. You will see all the joys and work soon too! Congratulations again!

  25. I turned in my application and I am waiting to hear back if I will be granted an interview. This is my fifth time down this rodeo, and I truly hope I will make line. They only can take 42 people (max) and there were over 300 at the Rush. Although it's the holidays, I can't stop thinking about getting a phone call which is silly because I am sure all of the members are busy spending time with their families and enjoying the holiday season. An acceptance would be the greatest Christmas, New Years gift EVER!!!!

  27. I just heard back. Apparently my application was incomplete because I didn't include TWO FORMS of identification. I am in TEARS! I don't know how I missed that? Now I have to wait 10 or 12 years for another line to happen. (Alumane chapter). Ladies please double and triple check your application and follow the directions. I would also suggest having someone else check your your items before sending it in. I am KICKING myself right now and it will take a long time for me to come to terms that I screwed up. Good luck to the rest of you!

  31. Interesting in that I just happened upon this after looking for an answer on the XYZ organization and had no idea I'd find answers to other questions. It's also very nice to see all the ladies who are joining a sorority of their dreams, wanting to join, or waiting on the process and learning the importance. I was also excited to see the pictures from National Convention where I actually saw several of my friends having a great time. I only meant "greatness" but used "interesting" because the information is quite interesting.

  36. I attended RUSH at the beginning of January. Turned my application 1/26 (deadline was 1/27)and had my interview on 2/7. I know its been 6 days but the first turn around was pretty fast. Do they have to send the voting results to headquarters first and then you will receive the phone call?

    2. About how many people attended your RUSH? I would say there was about 60 people at the RUSH I attended and I think they interviewed at least 26 people. The chapter is only accepting 25. So I hope I am included in that 25. I also did a really good job on my interview and I am pretty confident but you never know.

    3. It has been 12 days since my interview. However, I am kind of calm because I think interviews are based off of last names. (at least at the chapter I am interested) and my last name is the at beginning of the alphabet. So I am pretty sure that interviews have concluded by now and have been prep to send to national (or regional director). It is going to take a while for them to evaluate each application which is why the waiting takes awhile. (This is just my own hopeful opinion) So as of right now I think I am okay. My interview went very well, I am in positive spirit and hope everyone is trying to keep positivity on their side. Please respond if you think process of which applications are reviewed or sent is different. Thanks

Patience was not my strong suit, so like many, I checked this blog everyday just to hear what others were saying. I so appreciate having this forum and look forward to the process. I am the chair of two non-profits already, so I may have to give up my seat to make room for this organization's needs and it will be worth it. Good luck to you all. God Bless.

  40. UPDATE FOR ME! I received my phone call on EARLY Saturday morning (1:30am) I almost woke up my entire house after I got off the phone. I have read this blog since 7th Grade, I took in EVERYTHING that the author of this blog said, and I was in my feelings when I was rejected the first time. I followed her advice, felt sorry for myself just a little while, but picked myself up and prepared myself for the next go round. I would have never knew what to do with myself after my first rejection if it weren't for this blog. THANK YOU AUTHOR!!!! For the rest of you waiting, if you haven't received a letter yet, don't lose hope. I had my interview close to three weeks ago, and I finally got the call. I can't contain myself. I promise to check back after this process is over.

  42. So I got my call on last week, and I had only 48 hours to come up with the money. I worked all summer long to save up for this once in a lifetime opportunity and even worked over Christmas Break. Overtime I wanted to dip into my pledging fund (this is what I called it) I kept thinking how I would be crushed if I was voted in but couldn't pledge due to money problems. So for those of you still waiting on that call, I hope you have your funds ready because 48 hours is not a lot of time to get that grip together.
