Age Ain't Nothing But a Number.....

Aaliyah was correct when she first came out with this hit. (Oh how I miss her so) Age ain't  not nothing but a number. I have received a ton of request from prospective members asking what is the "AGE LIMIT" of joining an a BGLO. Truth be told, there isn't an age limit.

UNDERGRAD- A friend of my older sister joined Alpha Kappa Alpha her sophomore year in college. Mind you she went to college at age 16, so when she became a member of AKA, she was only 17 years old. Some felt she was too young, but it's all a matter of opinion. On the flip side, I had stated before that when I joined my respected organization, one my ships (line sisters) was in her 30s. My point is, you are never too old, or too young to join an organization. Now there may be some challenges if you want to join being older at the undergrad level. For example, some people can't handle being around, people younger than them. Imagine joining a BGLO with a bunch of 18, 19, and 20-year-olds? And you are in well in your 30s? Some of the complaints you may hear going through your process may seem stupid, frivolous, and dumb. TO YOU THAT IS! Remember you were once their age. So breaking up with boyfriends, or having a fight with a roommate, or a parent may seem small to you, but it's EVERYTHING to them.  If you find out you can't deal with their growing problems, then maybe you should hold off joining an organization until graduate chapter.

People wanting to join at undergrad level that are in their late 20's 30's and 40's are becoming more and more common now, simply because people are going back to school in their later years. So don't allow your age to deter you from joining, as long as you have an understanding that the people you will be pledging with could be a decade or so younger than you. As long as that doesn't bother you, then you should be ok.

GRAD- I think the oldest person I have seen that pledge an alum chapter was a gentleman that was well in his 60's. So at this level, age doesn't matter.

I hope this answers your questions and puts your mind at ease.

Until Next Time,

CIAO!

  1. I would really like to know your thoughts on the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, inc. MIP moratorium, or moratoriums in general, and what does it mean for those that are interested in membership (besides the obvious).

    Thanks

    1. Any prospective member that wants to join an org that is currently in a moratorium will have to wait until the period is over. In the meantime, just keep your grades up, and get involved.

    1. If you are thinking of joining you might want to take your picture down when you post to things like this. (Just a thought not trying to be rude)

  5. I needed to see this, I'm in my late twenties and I wasn't sure if I should join at the undergraduate level simply because of my age.

  6. Hi, I am a transfer student starting in the Fall at Salisbury University. Pledging is something that I've always wanted to do but you can't exactly do that at a community College. When do you think is the best time for me to pledge. I am very interested in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., in that respective order.

  7. I'm happy to see this. I'm a 22 year old woman who's recently graduated college and now wants to join a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I'm pretty intimidated by the fact that other women who would also like to join the particular chapter I am in are over 10+ years older than me. So far, I have met people around my age, but they are like 2+ years older.

  9. I am 40 years old and I decided to go back to school to get my BS. I'm thinking about pledging undergrad. Remain you that I am married with kids. Do you think that will be a great idea for me to pledge undergrad or just wait and go grad.

  10. I'm in my 40s also, and am finally pursuing my B.S. degree. It's always been my dream to be a sorority member. It's not about the ages of my "line sisters"; it's about my desire to contribute to the principles and service initiatives that will help my community. I don't think age should matter - it's about the passion to serve. Plus, I'm joining the ORGANIZATION, not just the local undergrad chapter.

    1. I'm 41 years old it have been my dream to pledge at an early age but did not go that route. Do you think be too old to pledge undergrad? I love doing community services, volunteering. I just want to have the opportunity to experienced the college life that missed out on by choice of going to work. I will not be at the University until 42/43 years old

  11. I needed to read this. I went to an HBCU that only had AKA's and those young ladies were so pleasant and always showed me love. I didn't stay due to student loan debt, but 10 years later I will be returning back to school to finish my undergrad. Thank you for this post. It is a soothing confirmation. I am looking forward to my journey. Thank you, Queen.

  12. Hello all I'm 39 soon to be 40 and I've been waiting to pledge since I was a young girl. Now that I'm older I was wondering if it was too late? If not I'm definitely interested. Is there a certain college I'd have to attend or something 🤔

So I'm back at it again. Is it too late?

  15. Unfortunately when I was in school some devastating things happened, causing me to level school short of my degree. Here it is 18 year later I'm back in school and I wood like to pledge kappa alpha psi. Do I need to wait until I graduate or can I start the process now?

    1. I just graduated with my bachelor’s degree. Which sorority will you be pledging? Were you invited? I was a part of an auxiliary of a group but did not get an invitation after graduation.
