Meet the Greeks!

As promised, I will discuss one of how "Meet the Greeks" works.

Meet the Greeks is an event that most schools host at the beginning of each school. Find out if you school has an event such as this, and if so PLEASE attend!

This event starts out with everyone meeting in one large room. The Executive Board of NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) will introduce themselves, as in some cases a representative from each Greek Chapter. They will then explain how the process works. The girls are split up in four groups, and the Men are split of in five groups. (Of course this is if the chapter has all NINE active NPHC chapters on campus. So for example if there are only three sororities on campus, then they will split you up in three groups oppose to four, and so on). Each group MUST attend ALL the rooms of sororities (women), or fraternities (men). This is for you to get to know all the sororities/fraternities on campus. This is also a clever way for you to be discrete on which org. You want to join.

Once you enter the room, the members will then introduce themselves, and give you a brief history about the organization on a national and chapter level. They will discuss the various programs they host on campus, the requirements for membership, play games, etc. In the end, there is a Q and A for all attendees.

Some prospective members are new to the Greek Life in general. For those people, I would highly recommend that you ask many questions to ALL Greek Orgs. Choosing a sorority/fraternity is a lifetime commitment, so you want to make sure you are confident when choosing the org of your choice.

After the Q and A are over, The group will then move to the next room, and the same thing will happen again.

Once All the girls have visited the Sorority Room, and the Men have met the Fraternities, and then everyone will return to the main meeting room and fellowship with everyone.

  1. My school actually had a Meet the Greeks Event approximately three weeks ago, and we were all just in a room for the whole time. Last year, which was my freshman year, it was the same thing just in a room, but they actually stepped, this year it was more of Q&A. I liked when they stepped because it showed the organizations and the relationships among with their fellow sorors or brothers in a unified way.

  3. Thanks for the info! Since I am no longer a collegiate, it is interesting to hear about the way the process is for undergraduates. This is cool because it gives BGLO prospectives the same opportunities that non-BGLO prospectives get where they are able to visit different Greek houses and go in with more of a clean slate rather than choosing which organization very soon.

  5. Hi, I am a new reader to your blog and I have really enjoyed catching up on your posts. My question is, is it ever too late to start going to events that the sorority you want to join is having?

  6. I wanted to comment on your Black Greek 101 as a whole. I love what you're doing. As a 4th-year undergraduate, I have never had anyone advise me on anything pertaining to greek life like you have with this simple blog. You've cleared up alot and I love your blog. Continue with the great work.

  8. During my freshmen year in college they had Meet the Greeks. Instead of going from room to room, they had the Greeks which was only 8 of the Divine 9 sit at the front of the room. They gave a brief speech about their organization and than a Q&A was held. Students were allowed to go and ask them questions from how much it would cost to how long the process would take. I do believe that having Meet the Greeks is something that is very informational.

  10. I attend an HBCU and at my school the Meet The Greek event was different. The event was outside on the yard and each greek org took turns strolling up to the steps of the building we were in front of, then they gave a brief speech over their history and then a mini improptu stepshow. It was awesome.
