I'm Greek and I'm Proud (Undergrad OR Grad)

So you just graduated from college, and for some reason or another, you decided that the FIRST thing you want to do after graduation is finding an alumni/alumnae chapter of Greek Phi Greek to join in your local community. Okay, I get it, you couldn't pledge because the Deltas were suspended, the Alphas didn't have intake, Your campus didn't have Ques on the yard, OR you tried and tired and tried again, only to receive multiple rejections. So now you are you feel your best chance is to try and join grad chapter.

So I talked about this SOooooo many times before, but after going to homecoming a few weeks ago, I HAD To bring this up AGAIN to make myself clear! There is NOTHING wrong with joining an alumnae/alumni chapter, and you should NEVER use an alumnae/alumni chapter to enter so that you can re-capture your college years during homecoming/reunions at your college/university. If you want MY opinion, if I pledged Delta at the Alumnae level, and I go back to my college for a reunion, then the only paraphernalia that EYE (and yes I spelled it that way on purpose) would be wearing is my school's paraphernalia. Why attend a reunion all decked out in Greek Wear and I didn't participate in that particular school? Now I am not by no means saying this is law, but this is what EYE would do.

I was present at homecoming reunion, and it was painful to see how some people who became Greek AFTER they left college how they were trying to "fit in," or re-capture their Greek Life experience (which was non-existence since they didn't pledge until AFTER they graduated) with the undergraduate chapters.

Case in point, BE PROUD WHERE YOU WERE MADE!!!!! Stop trying to fit in, and recapture your youth through the undergrad chapter. You ever heard of the term "Thirsty"? That's what you look like, and trust me it's not a good look! I was shaking my head to witness how some people are trying so hard to fit in with the undergrad chapter. Now I am not saying you can't speak, sing, or connect with them, I'm not saying that at ALL! But lets "think" about the definition of reunion which means "the reuniting of persons together after a separation." So how is forcing your way to "kick it" with a chapter you were NOT a member of, especially since the majority of the members who are planning the reunion, meaning the CURRENT members are planning everything?

Most chapters have their "own" special reunion "luncheon" during homecoming, and at my school, for example, that's a time where we get to know each other better, we introduce our lineage, we have a stroll off competition between either lines, or decades, etc. Instead, I would suggest that if you attend your college reunion, that you take the time to REUNITE with the people you went to school with.

When your chapter has an anniversary, then that is the time for you to join in together, wear your chapter shirt PROUDLY and reunite with your chapter fraternity brothers/sorors!

I guess that's all for now. Be blessed!

  1. I would like to join a grad chapter, but I've been reading things about being "made" that really turns me off. I don't want to join to be popular I feel its best for me, I like the idea of sisterhood, and community service. I've heard things about people mistreating members if they weren't "made". What's your opinion on it?

    2. Everybody knows there's a big difference in acceptance and politics when it comes to made and non made members which basically leaves the non made members margnalized. THERE IS NO GENUINE GREEK UNITY, DON'T BE FOOLED. AT THE END OF THE DAY IT'S ALL A FASCADE ..... MADE members constantly seek subtle and brazen ways to harass, embarass, and exclude PAPER (NON MADE) members, so seek Christ alone and stop looking for the approval of these foolish immature people. Join and socialize with the Body of Christ more. God Bless

  2. No such thing of being "Made" either you are an AKA or your not, Either you are a Delta or you're not, you either an Alpha or you not! If you are caught up of being made, maybe Greeklife is not for you! Just keeping it 100!

    1. Do you really think somebody who paid to get their behind beated and/or was harassed for weeks will take kindly or embrace a fellow "bro" or "sis" who didn't experience any of that and still became a member??!!

You can't be that oblivious, there will always be major discord, envy in these orgs so stop tryna fool yourself and others (whether you see it or not). God wrath is on those ppl.

  3. Hi, my college didn't have the black greek sorority that I am interested in so I had to wait until I graduated to join a grad chapter. I understand what you are saying about joining as a grad but I'm still young while im not interested in the parties however I am interested in learning the strolls & songs that one would learn as an undergrad. Is it possible to get the most out of undergrad while being grad without looking "thirsty?"

  4. I wanna be "made" the above poster says that you are either an AKA or you're not and while that is true, they must have never experienced being an greek person who pledged at the alumnea level wanting to bond and connect with undergrad members. It's more fun, you have a closer bond better than anyone else, and I want to experience that connection. PERIOD!

  5. This blog helped in so many ways and I'm pleased to announce I made it! I was initiated into Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated on Dec 14 and I'm still pinching myself to make sure it's not a dream!! So far I haven't received shade for going the grad route (it's not like I had a choice since sgrho wasn't at my undergraduate school) and I've received love from members in other d9 orgs. I love my chapter and sorority and if anybody wants to give me a hard time I'm not going to sweat it because at the end of the day I made the best decision for ME!

I'm not gonna take crap because someone doesn't think I'm "made" half of those people probably aren't even financial lol

    Eee-YIPPPP!

  6. Hello, I am a graduating senior from college. I went to rush; however, I wasn't selected. I know joining Greek organization is something I want to do. I plan on going to grad school in another state and just letting life take me where it pleases. I would really love to do it in grad school; however, I don't know if I'm going to be there once I graduate.
Would it be better for me to wait until I begin my career or should I try to pursue it while I am in grad school for two years? I know it's harder to join after undergrad because they do not have intake process as often as, I know the requirements of joining at the graduate later and exceed them (GPA, community service, etc.). What are some tips you can give me to help me on my road to joining a Greek organization?

  7. I'm joining a grad chapter because I didn't get picked because I was a graduating senior when the org came back on the yard. Most of them that crossed were fags anyway though. I want to see if someone has the nuts to say something out the way to me if I wear my letters during homecoming. I'll slap the fag out of them. I don't give a damn how long you was on line I'm a man first so you better respect me or you'll get a foot in your ass.

  8. I love this post! It speaks so much truth. I was initiated into my org through the alumnae process and I have no regrets. It's not even important why I didn't become a member during undergrad. I think it's sad that people feel the need to explain. At the end of the day, some members of the org will not fully accept alumnae initiated members. In open spaces, they will hug you, greet you, smile in your face but you can feel their true sentiments. However, if you became a member of the organization because it was in your heart, how these other members feel will be of no concern to you. Your bond will be with your line sisters/brothers that you crossed with. Enjoy and love on them. But, please, for the love of God, like Dablest has stated, don't go back to your college campus trying to fellowship at a chapter reunion that you were not a part of. Whether you like it or not, the members of that chapter will not have any respect for you and you just shouldn't want to do it. There are enough national, regional, and local Greek activities where you can social amongst your org members regardless of chapter initiation affiliation.

  9. My chapter got banned while we were online, so all of the girls are going grad then coming back to the yard for our final week together. Though we were already made. We were a week away from hell week… everyone on the yard knew. So this ain’t that, this is some peoples stories where we went through hell, we had a purpose and we’re still pursuing it. Thank you! Next!
