CANCELLED!!!!

                                                      TAKE ONE

What an exciting day. My hubby dropped me off at the Airport, and I was ecstatic to be running into sorors. After we embraced right before the security line, my darling husband headed home. I noticed that the sky was turning dark which was a little concerning to me. I called my husband and told him to be careful going back. The rain was coming down real hard, and then it happened. Everyone's phones started going off at the airport. Phoenix was about to get a massive storm, and there was a flood warning. Those that know me know I can be worrywart sometimes. I didn't want to call my husband and distract him from focusing on the road. So I just sat there waiting patiently for him to call me to let me know he made it back home safe. Around an hour later, (we only live 20 mins from the airport) he finally called and told me that he drove through the worst weather he has ever seen since we moved here.  Here is a video of what we were dealing with and what my husband drove through on the 101. Yes, that is a run-a-way boat, YIKES!

I was just thrilled he was home. Then it happened. Our flight got pushed back an hour, then 2 hours, then 4 hours, then...yup! CANCELLED! I was sad a little bit however if it was to keep us safe, then I am all for it. I called my Vegas hotel and told them that I would not be checking in until the next day.

Next, I had to stand in this LONG line to secure a ticket exchange for the next day. I was praying while I was in line to get an early flight. An hour and a half after standing in line, I was able to secure an early 8:45 a.m. flight to Vegas. I was the LAST one. The woman behind me was not happy at all, but there was really nothing I could do about that. I then called my darling husband to pick me up. I went back home and discovered I left a few outfits in the spare bedroom. I was relieved to know that I had an opportunity to re-pack.

Although I was sad for a "hot second," it dawned on me that this was indeed a blessing. I was able to re-pack my clothes, AND I there was $253.00 I didn't have to spend that night in the hotel since I wasn't checking in until the next day. I decided to use that amount towards the money I budgeted for at the vendors, YES! When I told my husband, he was like there you go, always making lemonade out of lemons.

I'm Back (Again)!!!!

                                                           Hello, Everyone!

I have been MIA for a little bit trying to catch up with things. It has been a busy, yet productive summer. My darling husband and I moved, I went down south to Mississippi to celebrate my granny's 90th birthday, I attended several musical and educational conferences, and I am preparing for my new leadership role at my school. Now that things have settled down, I am glad to be back blogging. First off, if I haven't said it before, I will say it now, CONGRATS to everyone who crossed the sands into greek-life. Now the REAL work begins. I love this time of year. New members are excited about putting in the work for the chapter; old members are excited that they can "pass the torch" to those new members, and prospective members are excited and nervous hoping that their local chapter will have membership intake.

As for me, one of the highlights of my summer was attending our 53rd National Convention. Being surrounded by thousands and thousands of sorors was just amazing.  Although my hubby usually joins me, this time he decided to stay back. The icing on the cake was that it was in Viva-Las Vegas. The next few posts will be about the great time I had in Vegas taking care of business and having a little fun on the side.

For those of you in college,  I wish you a beautiful and successful school year. For those of you not in college but are seeking membership into a BGLO, wishing you all the best!

Ciao for now,

V

My Delta Treasures!!!!!

Happy Summer Everyone!!!!

I can't believe it's the second week of July, and in a few weeks, I will be back in school.  One exciting event that I am looking forward to is our National Convention in Las Vegas. I am all registered and ready to meet, connect, reconnect, with sorors. I promise to post a recap after convention is over. In the meantime, I came across these beauties before hitting the vendors at Vegas. Usually I do some "Major Damage" when I attend NC (National Convention) so I was thrilled when I came across these beauties. I wanted to share these finds with you.

I can't wait to pack up my clothes in these. DST suitcases. When I first saw them, it was LOVE at first sight. The only thing that will make this perfect is buying a cover for the larger suitcase. I have decided NOT to bring the larger suitcase. I am afraid that it may get scratched up in route to Vegas. I will however, be bringing the smaller carry on suitcase. My hubby asked me if I was not willing to travel with the larger suitcase, why would I purchase it? I explain to him that I only paid for the larger suitcase, and the smaller carry-on was free.  I will be using the larger suitcase at times when we would be driving out of town. I am not taking any chances of these beauties getting scratched up.

When I first saw these clutches, I could NOT decided on which one to get. The quality was impeccable, and what I loved about about these clutches are you can dress them up with a LBD, or down with some cute jeans. I ended up buying ALL of them. I can't wait to rock them.

I love this bracelet! After watching the new movie "Wonder Woman," When I saw this bracelet, I just HAD to have it

The Vendor gave me this CUTE compact mirror as a free gift with my order. (HOW SWEET). I love how it was packaged in this beautiful velvet-y pouch. With this compact mirror, I can always make that my makeup is on point, and if I need to refresh my lips with lip gloss.

When I saw another soror rock this with her outfit, I just HAD to have it.  Although you can purchase them separately, I had to get BOTH of them. They come in two different colors (Gold and Silver) and I opted to get the silver. One has pearls, and one does not have pearls. Paired together, they look amazing.  I can't wait to wear them with my suits, or my Delta Blazer!

Welcome to the Sisterhood and Brotherhood!!!!

Sisterhood by Women of Soul -D Glenn Daniel

Hello Everyone Out there!

It's that time again. My timeline, twitter feed, Instagram is FILLED with pictures of people fresh off the sands.  So far I have heard from 127, yes ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-SEVEN people who followed me on my blog and are now members of the Divine Nine. (Alpha, Kappa, Delta, AKA, and Zeta). This makes my heart warm. Enjoy being a Neo It's the BEST feeling in the world. Every single time I see a new member of ANY organization for that matter, it brings it all back for me when my Big Sisters revealed that they were no longer my Big Sisters but my sorors. When I was finally able to throw up the pyramid. When I formed my lips and did a loud Oo-oop! It was AMAZING!

Although a lot of you have reached out to privately to inform me that you are now a "Proud Member" of ABC/XYZ, I would LOVE for you to share your excitement on this post. A lot of you have shared comments anonymously, (which is understandable), it would be great to see who you are. A bonus is to see you throwing up your organization's hand sign.

Now for those of you that didn't make it. I have created a post about this matter before so that I will highlight a few things from a previous post. It is okay to feel sad, mad, and confused. I would still suggest that you support the new members. You never know, those new members MAY be the very same people who will vote Yay or Nay for you to come through their chapter. It's essential that you show the new members your support. Let them know that although YOU are indeed happy for them. If it's too much for you to bear, then that's fine also. Crying helps, writing your feelings down in a journal, or diary help, or even talking your feelings out with someone that you trust. Getting over the fact that you are not a member of the sorority/fraternity that you dream up will take some time. Take all the time you need. My advice to you? Don't give up. It may not be your time now, but you never know what the future holds.

Pledging is Expensive, and Membership is Even More Expensive.

I have said over, and over, and over, and over again that becoming a member of the Divine Nine is NOT cheap. Not cheap by NO MEANS! When I realized I wanted to become a member of my organization, I started to do my research. I had no clue how much it would cost for me to pledge. Was it $300? $500? $1000? $2000? The information wasn't available, and at that time I had no CLUE that I had family members who were Greek. So I was left in the dark. Since I only worked during the summer in college,  I saved. I saved, and collected, and saved. I went as far as opening up a savings account at my mom's bank and put at least 50 percent of my earnings into a savings account every payday. I was on a full music scholarship at my school, and I did not want to take out any loans. Thankfully I didn't have to. As soon as you realize you want to pledge, I would suggest that you start saving. Save as much as you can.  Some of my sorority sisters took out loans to pay for the initiation fee. Some had family members who paid the fee. Some like me worked and paid their way.

Thankfully I saved up more than enough money. No worries there. However, the buck does not stop at your initiation fee. After you become a member, you will still need money for your annual membership dues. College dues are substantially a lot LOWER than Alumni/Alumnae dues. (Thank GOODNESS FOR THAT). As a member of an undergraduate chapter, there are still other things to consider that costs money. Regional Conferences, Collegiate Retreats, National Conventions, Membership Training, etc. All of this cost...Yup, you guessed it, MONEY! More than likely you will need to travel to these conferences/conventions which also costs MONEY. Membership in these organizations can be expensive. Some of my sorors have asked, what is the benefit of going to these conferences/conventions. Well, the benefit is knowing how the organization works on a Regional/National Level.
You are also allowed to get your voice heard, and there is the sisterhood/fellowship side of it. I have met so many sorors from across the globe at the National Convention. My first convention was in my hometown, Chicago,  Il in 2000. I met a ton of sorors back then that I still keep in touch with. They include sorors from California, Texas, Hawaii, Alaska, and Washington D.C.  Not only did I learn a lot of Delta from the business side of things at the national level, but I also had a ball. From the welcome event, the step-show, Celebrity Gala, the after hour parties, etc. Let's say that I didn't get ANY sleep during this time. For one it was my FIRST national convention. PLUS, I was brand spanking new in the organization, just crossing a few months before.

My Ship and I at our first National Convention In Chicago

When my husband and I first got married, he was stressing out on what to get me for a wedding present. He asked me if there was anything that I wanted, and without giving it a second thought, I told him that I wanted to purchase Diamond-Life membership with my sorority. It as $1500. That was a LOT OF MONEY for us back then considering that I JUST left college with NO job, and he just started his brand new career. I told him that there was Delta allowed its members to make a payment plan, so all I would need to do was sign up. Thankfully I did. Two years later, Delta did away with lifetime memberships.  I was able to jump on the last train before it left the track.

When  I was no longer a college student, I transferred my membership and became a Membership at Large. This allowed me to still register for Conventions and Conferences, as well as still be in the "know" in terms of Delta however I did not have the benefit of fellowshipping with Sorors within a chapter. When I made my LAST Diamond-Life payment, I was ecstatic!!!!! It was HARD at first, but well worth it in the end. Since I no longer had to make payments, I used that money to pay for Regional Conferences and National Conventions. Registration fees, flights, hotels, and food all cost money. Not to mention, you might want to have a special stash of cash to shop at the vendors. When I went to our Centennial Convention in Washington D.C., I spent well over $4000 on that trip. (Flights, Registration, Hotels, etc.). As I stated before, It costs MONEY to be in these organizations.

The point of this post? Keep that in mind as you are going out for membership. I have witnessed too many times where people who are dying to become members of the Divine Nine, they get it, work HARD during their time in the undergrad chapter (or the first couple of years at the alumnae level), and then......NOTHING! They are no longer interested in paying dues, or being active. Now I get it LIFE HAPPENS! I've said this before if crossed at the undergrad level, once you graduate from college, your priority might not be to become active in an alumni/alumnae chapter. You need to find a job, or you are continuing your education at the graduate level, and overall you are trying to settle into adulthood. In today's society people are worried about layoffs, job security, bills, family crisis, healthcare, etc., so paying dues or attending a Regional Conference/National Convention is just not a priority for them. Understandable! What irks me is when people that no longer want to pay their dues, and complain that their organization is too expensive, YET at the drop of a hat, they are the primary person front a center at a step-show, or pari'd up from Head to toe at their school's homecoming.

To prospective members- I will say this now, MEMBERSHIP in ALL of these organizations are expensive. EXPENSIVE! I want to ensure that you know this now before making a lifetime commitment.

To Neos: Make sure you save, save, save. I think it's beneficial that you attend a regional conference AND A National Conference/Boule so you can see the inner workings of your organization. This is also a great way to network, fellowship, and connect with sorority/fraternity members from all over the globe. I feel you are doing yourself a disservice if you do NOT attend a convention/boule.

In summary, my advice to all is to SAVE! SAVE! SAVE!

Ring, Why don't you,,,,,,RING!!!!!!

You Attended Rush
You Submitted Your Packet
You had your Interview
And now......you wait, And Wait,
AND WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This part of the process is torture! Every time the phone rings, your heart skips a beat. You double to check to make sure the ringer is turned all the way up on your phone. Back when I was waiting for the phone to ring, I had to make sure the phone was not OFF the hook. My girlfriend and I (who also applied) went to Denny's to grab a bite to eat. We were BOTH nervous as all get out. We both figured, no sense of being nervous on an empty stomach. We ate, talked about being line sisters, laughed, and then rushed home to make sure we wouldn't miss our phone call.

Look, I get it. The waiting period is brutal. A day can seem like a week. A week can seem like a month and two weeks can look like a year.  My advice? Keep yourself active. If you are in undergrad, then study for that test, or put your head in those books.  Go to the gym. Go out with our girlfriends/guy-friends. If you are applying for the alumni/alumnae level, keep yourself occupied with work or your family.  Keep yourself busy, Busy, BUSY! TRUST ME, once you get that phone call that you have been "Chosen" for membership, your time as you know it will be limited. So enjoy the free time while you can.

A constant question that I get often is how long do I have to wait. Well, it depends. How many people were at your rush? Were there a lot of prospects there? Why does this matter? Look at this way. Let's say there were 300 people at the Rush.  Two hundred fifty applied for membership and turned in their application. After going through all of the apps, 225 qualify for an interview. That's a lot of interviews. Once the interviews are over, the members need to narrow it down to prospective members. There are a lot of factors involved, for example, does the organization have a legacy clause?  Does the College /University have a cap/limit of how many prospective members the org can accept? This all takes time. Good luck to all of you, and once you cross into Greek-Land, come back share your story with others. I have also been known to send "Neophyte" gifts to new members, so you NEVER know. :) wink!

Got Questions???? I Got Answers! (Part I)

Hello out there! It's been a while since I last updated my blog! Things have been hectic with school and all, but now that things are winding down, I can answer a few of the questions that you posted on my blog.

1. Q. Now that I am in graduate school, does that mean I can no longer apply for membership into a Black Greek Letter Organization?
A. No, that does not mean you cannot apply. Most BGLO has Alumnae membership intake. This requires that you hold a Bachelor's Degree from a College and University and you have graduated with the minimal, yet required GPA needed for membership. I have many friends and sorors who have gone through the membership intake process at the Alumni/Alumnae level.

2. Q. I am the first person in my family to attend college. How can I show interest, so the members on the campus know that I am interested in joining their organization?
A. I have answered this question time and time again. The BEST way for the members to know you are interested in joining their organization is by attending their events. Trust me, after while they will notice your face, and realize that there may be interest there on your part.

3. Q. I am BEYOND the average undergraduate age. (Over 25). Do I still have a chance of becoming a member through undergrad?
A: Yes, As long as you meet the requirements, you have a chance of becoming a member. None of the BGLO discriminates based off of age, race, or religion.

4. Q. If my mom, aunt, and sister are all members of XYZ org,  can I automatically become a member of the same organization?
A: If you have family members that are members of the organization who wishes to become a member of, then I would suggest that you speak with them. All BGLO have specific rules in terms of "legacies" Your best bet is to talk to your family member to see if the organization they belong to honor legacies.

5. Q. Who can write my letter of recommendation?
   A. This can be best answered at the informational/RUSH. At the information/RUSH, they will go over the details about who can write your letter of recommendation. Side note: I would recommend that you ask for a LOR from a person who you know PERSONALLY! I have been asked to write over ten letters of recommendations, and how many have I written? TWO!

6. Q.  What happens if the chapter that I want to join is suspended or just coming from a suspension? How can I become a member after the suspension is up?
A. Generally speaking, most BGLOs have it set up where the nearest Alumnae/Alumni Chapter is in charge of bringing back the chapter. The best advice I can give you is to keep your eyes and ears open. If a chapter is coming from a suspension and the Alumnae/Alumni chapter voted to revive the chapter, trust me you will know about it through fliers, social media, programs, social activities, community service opportunities, etc.

7. I want to join XYZ, but they have never had a chapter on my campus. Can I still join?
A: That is indeed a possibility; however it's a long process. First, you need to get approval from the College/University. You also need to reach out to the nearest chapter in the area. (Alumnae/Alumni Chapter). Starting a new chapter is not only time-consuming but VERY expensive.

8. Do I have to "Step" to join?
A: I get this question quite often. No, you are not required to "Step."

9. I do not have the required GPA because I experienced a family tragedy, I took a class that was too hard which killed my GPA, or my teacher gave me a grade that I did not deserve. What can I do?
A: Nothing. No, let me take that back, FOCUS ON YOUR GRADES! I have said this before, and I will repeat it.  You are not in college to pledge. You are in college to get a degree. So I will once again say to focus on your grades for now. If you can pull them up, then, and only then, should you focus on pledging an organization.

10. Q. I can't find anyone from the organization that I want to join to write me a letter of recommendation. What can I do?
A: Nothing at this point. Take a year to get to know the members of the organization. This can vary from attending events, performing community service events with the orgs, etc. Most of the BGLOs requires it's prospective members to receive a letter of recommendation from one of its members. So I would suggest that you get to know them. Oh and this doesn't have to be from the chapter that you are seeking membership from. This could include your past teachers, members of your church, neighbors, etc. If you do not know any members, then you are not putting yourself out there enough.

If you have any other "burning" questions, drop a comment here, and I will try to answer them in my Part II
