It's been a while since the last time I posted so I wanted to check in with you. Yup folks, it's THAT time of year where people are applying to various orgs of their choice. Hopefully you have prepared for this journey and you started preparing WAY before attending rush. If you haven't read my previous posts, let me point out some key points in terms of important elements:1. Informational/Rush - Get there EARLY to grab a seat. Some Rushes have more than 500 prospective members.
2. Treat this like a professional job so dress to impress.
3. I hope you saved up because joining these organizations can be quite expensive.
4. Listen and take notes during your rush. You want to make sure you don't miss anything.
5. Ask questions! The only way you will be able to get your questions answered, is to ask away.
6. Make sure you get the letters of recommendations ahead of time. Double check what is written and verify that it is correct. Verify the service hours are correct.
7. As SOON as you realize you want to be a member of XYZ organization, start networking with members from that org. Not member, MEMBERS (I am stressing the "s" for a reason). I have mentioned before that when I joined my beloved org I reached out a few members of my organization to get a letter of recommendations. I knew them ALL personally, so I felt confident that they could speak to my character. I knew six members PERSONALLY. They knew my record, my intent of wanting to join their organization, and my service record. I had the CHOICE of choosing WHO I wanted to write my letter of recommendation.
8. Enjoy the process. Will you be nervous? Absolutely! However, this is a time you will never forget. I remember when I was preparing for my process, I relied on Soror BeeJae Jackson and her DeltaNet website to get me through it. She gave the BEST advise for prospective members.
9. Double and Triple check your work before turning in your application. We are all human and make mistakes, however this is NOT the time you want to make mistakes. The stakes are high, and I am sure they will be scrutinizing all applications. You want to make sure your application is on point!
10. Follow directions! This is VERY important. Not only should you take notes at your information/rush as I mentioned above, you also want to follow directions to a "t'.

Hi! I just attended a Rush on January 5th in the DMV for org XYZ. There couldn't have been more than 150 people at the Rush and the line cap is 37. Application deadline is Sunday, January 26th and I sent it in (overnighted) today! Not only did I read the directions 25x, I had relatives who are members check my application too. I'm excited and nervous! Anyone else applying in this season, I wish us all the best!

DeleteThis came at the best time. I completed my application for a Rush in St. Louis and I am eating on pins and needles. It seemed like it was over 250 at the rush. I looked over my application over and over and over again and even had my Delta Mentor look it over, she said it was perfect and had no suggestions. I hope she was right.

I heard that since there were so many people at the rush, they are really nick picking trying to narrow it down. My best friend and I both went out for membership. I haven't heard from her and I didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable in case she made it. I will be front and center if she did to celebrate her in case she did. We both went out for membership in College and both received rejection letters back then. I hope this time will be different.
DeleteHey, sis! I am so sorry to hear that you were rejected. Are you comfortable disclosing the reason your application was incomplete? If not, I understand. I hope that even though you are disappointed now, you realize that this doesn't take away from who you are and all that you've accomplished to date! If this is something you are truly passionate about, I hope you will try again.
DeleteMore perspective - I hope your best friend makes it this time. If she does, you definitely have someone who's got your back and is able to write your recommendation letter in the future and put in the good word for you!
Ladies, I am so sorry to hear that you received your rejection letters. I know that must hurt especially if it was due to application errors. It's so strict and they really do look for any and everything to cut down the numbers. Just continue to support the chapter and whenever the next line is, you will have be more prepared. DeleteI wish I found this blog sooner as I would have prepared myself. I just recently attended rush and I had my money ready, my letter of intent ready, and I thought my letter of recommendation from an active member. She declined to write my letter. She said she didn't know me in the service capacity well enough to write my letter of recommendation. True, I don't know her that well, but was seriously banking on it. Another member who knows me very well isn't qualified to write my letter. I asked her if she could have any of her line sisters to write my letter and she said that is not longer allowed.

Hey! I don't know if you still lurk around here, but what ever happened with this? I was nervous that I wouldn't have someone to write a letter for me. I know many members of my org of choice, but not many who are financial. Thankfully, I was able to find someone who didn't know me very well, but could tell by my effort that I am hungry for this and they wrote my letter. I am so grateful for their trust in me! I don't know what I would do in your situation and I'm sorry that happened to you. Next time, I think you should explicitly ask the people close to you about their willingness to help. I was almost in a similar space as you, though, so I know it can happen!

ReplyDeleteAre you currently in college or are you trying to join an alumnae chapter? Have you attended events for both sororities? Do members from both organizations know you pretty well? What do you like about both organizations? Which one stands out to you the most?
DeleteIt’s for graduate chapter. I know deltas but they aren’t in the chapter I’m applying to. I know zetas and they aren’t in the chapter I’m applying to. I have not attended event for neither organization. I like everything about delta accept the difficulty of joining. Lol. I like zeta because my experience with them has been more humbling and welcoming. They don’t seem to require much to join. I guess it boils down to competition. I don’t like competing smh
DeleteIf you have not yet decided which one you want to join, then you should not apply to either at this time. Both are LIFETIME memberships. You don't want to join one and regret it later.
DeleteAlso people from each org know each other, especially in the same city. They WILL talk and once they see that you applied to both but came out as the other, there could potentially be negativity around your name. You don't want to start your Greek life as such.
Lol did you attend a PWI for undergrad? You cant just apply for both and see who picks you. These arent NPC bids. I think you're also underestimating the process a bit. Especially for an alumnae chapter. Alumnae chapters dont have events as often as undergrad and you HAVE to make a connection with these people to get their votes. How are you going to do that for both? Im telling you now it will be alot. I've been at it with my potential chapter (going to events, getting to know them personally, and waiting for a line) for over 2 Years ever since I moved here. And although I've made decent progress I STILL don't feel like a shoe in. I just cant imagine putting in that kind of work (getting numbers, communicating Outside of events, learning info for questions they could ask on what you know) && Money-because this isnt undergrad and alumnae events can run from $35-$50-for TWO different orgs. Plus they WILL ask why you want to be in their organization in particular and saying "well it boiled down to your lack of competition" will not bode well for you....I think you should take some time to really think about this.
DeleteI agree with the others that have replied. You don't seem to have done a lot of research on either one of the organizations. When you are ready to apply to either one, how do you plan to gain membership? You stated that although you know members in both orgs, none are a part of your desired chapters. You need a majority vote for DST and an invitation for ZPB. How can the members get to know you, if you don't attend their events and make yourself known?
DeleteTo the people that have been through the process already or are privy of how particular chapters can be: is one small grammatical error means for an application packet to be thrown out? The rest of my packet aligns with what's required but I noticed a grammar error in my LOR after submitting :/.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious to know what you mean by grammatical error. Can you please be more specific? If you forgot a punctuation mark in one of your responses, that should not be grounds for ineligibility.
DeleteI’m in the same boat too. I have three very minor typos in my application. I spoke to active folks and they said that it shouldn’t matter. It’s hard but I wouldn’t worry about it as long as major things are covered (service hours, financial/active letter, copy of complete app, etc.) are met, you should be okay.

DeleteIt was probably about 40 ladies at rush. I just had my interview tonight and from my understanding all interviews were conducted this evening. I have been told I might hear back by the weekend. The Vice President told me I did good. I was nervous but I think I gave thoughtful answers.

DeleteHoping someone could help me, preferably a D9 sorority member especially DST.. I read the article about recommendation letters and it said you need a sponsor && a letter from a member who can talk about your service hours..I'm a bit confused. Can someone explain to me what exactly a sponsor is? Is that the same as a member who writes your letter of rec? Is the letter of rec and the community service letter the same? My boyfriend is a neo and during his application process his community service letter came from a Delta who knows him well in a capacity of service and other things. But the Article made it seem like the person who writes your letter of rec has to be in your org because it said they needed to be financial and that they would be the ones to talk about your service hours...I'm soo confused and would be grateful for someone to shed a little light on this
ReplyDeleteThe specifics of what and who you need in the letter(s) will be explained at Rush. This blog tries to keep things general even though the author is a Delta. Different organizations have different requirements as far as sponsor/financial member. I will tell you though that yes, you will need to know a FINANCIAL member of Delta Sigma Theta to write a letter for you. Therefore, make sure you are making connections with multiple people for when the time comes. Don't focus on just 1 or 2 because they may not be FINANCIAL at the time when you apply. Also, keep up your community service. Like non-stop. Hope that helps! - Signed a member of DST
DeleteFor DST there are 2 letters- one from community service and another from a financial Delta. The Delta should know you well and could speak about service etc.
DeleteHave you attended a rush? I ask because all of that information will be discussed in detail at an interest meeting/rush. You mentioned an article and if you are talking about this info from the original poster, I believe she was speaking in general. All organizations have their own specific requirements which they share with prospective members at their interest meetings or rush.
DeleteI am not a member, but I attended a RUSH 2 years ago and that doesn't sound familiar. The criteria for letters of recommendation or public service were provided to us within the membership application packet. I am not sure if a member would answer this question on this forum. Maybe you can ask the DST member that you were planning to ask for the recommendation letter. I hope you get your answer and good luck.
DeleteYou need 2 letters for DST. One from an organization where you performed CONSISTENT service, and the other from a financial Delta. Hope this helps

ReplyDeleteAfter a month and a half, I think that you definitely should have heard something by now. Do you know anyone else that was applying to that chapter that you can reach out to? Is your sponsor/letter-writing in that chapter that you can ask if interviews have taken place?

ReplyDeleteI attended the rush in Atlant and there was about 600 ladies there. I am very nervous as I have attended a rush in the past. I made it to the interview but was not selected. It's very hard to make it in the Atlanta area do to the number of girls that show up and the time between each line. I heard we should start receiving calls between this weekend and next so I'm patiently waiting for my opportunity. Does anyone have any tips on how to prepare for the interview?

The 1 thing I'm not certain about is whether my transcript made it in time (even though I ordered it the day after Rush and my alma mater is local and mails them within 2 business days) so I'm also checking the mail daily hoping I don't see a rejection later.

DeleteI attended rush on 1/18 with packet due 2/10. I already submitted my packet. Just waiting for an interview call. My anxiety is so bad I'm scared I might get a letter stating my packet was incomplete, even thoughI checked it a trillion times. There were close to 800 women at the rush and I'm sure they are going to be looking for the tiniest thing to eliminate women.
ReplyDelete800 women? Wow. Give them 3.5 to 4 weeks to sift through applications before they contact applicants.
DeleteAssuming this is the org I think it is, they don't start reviewing applications until after the deadline. Every application has to be put together (transcripts located and put with the correct application) etc and all complete applications are rated. Then, prior to interviews, the regional director has to approve of the applicants who will be interviewed. You have quite a while to wait before getting called back! Hang in there!

DeleteHi Ladies! I am so happy to make it to the next step in the process. My rush was the first week of January. Apps were due 1/26 and we received our call exactly two weeks after the deadline. All calls were made on the same night. Anxious and excited about the interview. I'll let you know how it goes. Also, there were about 400 women at my rush.

The other bigger chapter had the same timeline last year too. Rush on 1/5, applications due 2/16, etc. Speculation due to history.

@9:09 Sorry to hear that you were rejected. :-( Did they give a reason why? I know some orgs do have a form for those whose application is rejected. Also did you mean to put 2/16 as the date on the letter? That's in the future.
DeleteOhhh! I see. So this is how I'm thinking. They told us during Rush when we need to be available for the process, if selected. I read a lot of the timelines in the post from last year and I felt like (I could be dead wrong) the timeframe between the application deadline and interview is usually longer than the timeframe between the interview and chapter vote. So since they told us when we need to be available for the process, I figured the interviews would happen closer to that time. Again, I could be dead wrong! But I'm not going to go into panic mode for another couple weeks. I AM checking my mail for a rejection letter, though, every single day.
DeleteDMV Dreamer, I'm pretty sure you're correct. The from old posts and my own experience in the DMV, the call for the interview is about 2-3 weeks from the application due date. The vote takes place pretty quick (like within 2-3 days) after all candidate interviewing is done. Not sure how long it takes from there to get the call. But I'm guessing if you're selected you'll know before the end of Feb.

Delete10:32pm Anon, I was referring to my rejection last year. The letter was dated for 2/16 but I got it on the 20th. Again the application process was different last year than this year so that may explain the quicker turnaround. This year, the background checks are done with the application and sent to the regional director before you can interview so that may explain why calls for the DMV chapter that DMV Dreamer and I applied haven’t happened yet.

DeleteThey don't have many public events. I used to live in an area with a large chapter & they have events very often so I actually got to meet several members of that chapter before I moved. It was actually completely by chance that I even found out about the Rush and I found out maybe 4 hours before the Rush started! I am seriously just so grateful that I was even able to apply! I hope they see something in me!

DeleteSo I went back to the post from last year. The other chapter had interviews around the 20th-23rdish. I've basically been telling myself that I should hear something toward the end of February so I'm gonna keep that energy heading into this week & the following week. I hope we all get interviews! I will send an update no matter what happens!

Delete@8:11pm, Ah the service area time period. Yes this is pretty new and definitely makes it unfortunate for those that just moved. However I'm sure they did it because too many people were changing addresses right before/after Rush to meet the requirements. It's worst though since so many Alumnae chapters don't have Rush often.
DeleteI attended Rush, ordered my transcripts, and I thought I had all my ducks in a row. That is until I contacted the person to write my letter of recommendation. She turned me down. Nicely, but nevertheless said that she doesn't write letters anymore. I am heartbroken. I just automatically assumed she would write me one. Although I haven't spoke to her in a few years, I should have kept that connection between the two of us open. I can't even get mad at her, I am just mad at myself. So for those of you aspiring to become members of your organization, keep those lines open for those who needs either a sponsorship or a letter of recommendation. Ask them ahead of time if the time presents itself, what can you do to EARN their letter of recommendation. I should have a done that years ago with her. Now I am hoping, wishing, and praying that I can come across someone who will have mercy on me to write me a letter. If not, then lessoned learned and I will have to wait for another 7-10 years.
ReplyDeleteOh nice! What makes you think we will hear today or tomorrow? Based on the timeline they gave, I wasn't expecting to hear anything until the end of the month. Maybe you have information from a reliable source, though.
DeleteI also got VERY lucky with my letter and it came down to the wire for me! I wanted to submit at least 1 week early, but I overnighted my application about 4 days before the deadline. Check your church, ask anyone you know who is a member and may know financial members... don't quit!

DeleteAt Anon 11:59am, She is the Vice President of a neighboring chapter, so I am sure her dues are paid in full. I'm not going to take it personal though. We didn't have a close relationship and I haven' spoken to her in while, so I can only imagine how I came across when I asked for for an LOR.
DeleteI got very, very, very lucky with my letter of recommendation. How much time do you have? Maybe you have a friend who has a friend that is financial and active? I suggest you try that avenue. Good luck!

DeleteI think the interview went okay, but sometimes we can be very hard on ourselves. Rush was 12/21, Application Due 1/20, Interview Call 2/5, Interview 2/8.
DeleteRush was 1/4/20; Interview was 2/7/20...I got my call today!!! I am beyond excited because this was my 3rd time trying with an Alumnae chapter. This is a dream come true and prayers answered. If it's your desire, don't ever give up.

DeleteMy advice for preparing for the interview would be to know specifically why you want to join the sorority and express what you can offer the sorority in terms of knowledge and skills.

Delete@ 9:51 Good luck. I hope it's your time as well. I'm at the point where I'm not sure if I'll apply again. Not because I don't want it, but because of these long 10-15 year waits. I'm an older candidate now and even though people join in their 60s and 70s I'm not sure if I want to be that person. Right now I'm just trying to put it out of my mind and see how I feel when the time comes... I figure I've got at least 4-8 years before anything happens again and I might not even be in the same service area. It's a bit disheartening.

I hope third time is the charm. I know a few members of the chapter and others from surrounding chapters. I haven't been called for interview as of yet. I hope a call will come very soon. From what I hear that the packets are scored with your interview as well. My question is how important is the scoring in regards to chapter voting. Are candidates recommended based on scores? I read in the blog how some applicants have been accepted without knowing anyone in the chapter. Just want to know what are the odds. Goodluck to everyone that has applied to their orgs. of choice...
I would like to know how they score the applications. I had my interview earlier this week and the whole chapter was at the interview so I assume they probably voted the same night as all interviews were conducted that evening. I’m just anxiously awaiting a decision.
DeleteI have this exact question and I don't think anyone would ever tell us the answer, unfortunately. Part of me feels like the score must hold some weight. Like- I know that part of the reason the regional director has to approve is to make sure everything is fair. That sounds to me like if your score is really high, but you didn't get majority vote, they may try to make an exception. I feel like I'm reading too much into it, though.
DeleteI don't know a single person in the chapter I'm applying to, but it's a small chapter and they barely have any events so I think I should be ok. I think that knowing people matters more in a huge chapter.
Hi. I have a friend that applied in Florida with those dates. As far as I know, she is still waiting. As long as you don't get a rejection letter, don't lose hope. I helped her go over her application so I hope it's complete. My guess is that they will make calls this weekend or next.
DeleteI don't want to give away the inner workings of the sorority and their process. Just know that at the end of the day, the chapter vote is all that matters. Someone can have an amazing application and interview and not make it while someone else can barely meet the requirements but know a lot of people in the chapter and make it.
DeleteI was one of those lucky people that didn't know anyone in the chapter but I looked great on paper and had a decent interview (I think). I made it in somehow LOL and I have been working my butt off for these last few years. Wishing you luck in this process!
I had never heard that they score the application packets. I think the best candidates should be selected if you’re really wanted to live up to the mission of the organization. I recently had an interview and I’d say I look good on paper and I’m confident my interview went well. I know a couple people in the chapter. The chapter has about 40 ladies. I’ve been consistently attending their events. I am waiting on a response now. I tired once undergrad so this would be my second try. I feel I wasn’t ready during undergrad but now I’m in a different space and feel like I could truly add to the organization. If I don’t get it now, I would be shocked. I would try again because this is something I’ve wanted for years.
DeleteI don't know a soul in this chapter where I attended Rush and obviously I know nothing about the selection process. When my mind is not busy with other things, I feel like I'm just sitting around psyching myself out! The whole thing about the vote is a little disheartening because I know my application is amazing (I’m a Dr, 4X the required public service, volunteering with 4 other organizations...) but I know that absolutely none of that matters at the end of the day. It’s not my organization and I don’t make the rules, though. I have to remember that I’m not always in control! I’m just going to keep God first, pray on it, cast my burdens on Him, and keep doing what I’ve been doing!

@3:42, do not say that you KNOW that none of that matters. Believe that sororities are looking for those that excel above their requirements. Even if you do not know a lot of members, if your application really is that grand, then you will have a good chance. Take the time now to prepare yourself for the interview. There are plenty of tips out there, and even on this blog, of how to prepare yourself. Just knock the interview out the park and you have a great chance. Please come back and update us on your status.

Hi, I rushed in Florida with that exact timeline: Rush on 1/5/2020; packets due on 1/26/2020 and this morning, 2/17/2020 I received a phone call to interview this Wednesday, 2/19/2020. My heart is still racing. This is my 2nd time applying and I am hoping for the best!

Make sure you fully answer and look not only at the person that asked the question but the entire panel/group.

DeleteSo I just got my rejection letter today. I stared at it for about 30 mins. After it sunk in that I would not be a part of that number, I cried. I cried for about an hour. This is my third time applying (once in College). Three of my girlfriends went out for membership as well. I haven't heard from them yet, so I am not sure if they made it or not. I will be logging off social media for a while because these next few months will be very difficult for me. It will be even harder after they are introduced to the community. Good luck to all of you still going through the process. I wish you nothing but the best, and I hope NONE of you go through what I am going through right now......rejection!

DeleteI've been in your shoes four times and it will get easier as the time goes by. My last time I was depressed for about two weeks and didn't want to do anything, but as the days went by I got better and kept telling myself it will be you one day. My first and third time I was rejected because of the way my community service letter was written. The second and fourth time I was able to get an interview, but didn't get the majority vote. Mind you I hadn't been attending any events, so that was my downfall. When the next time come around I'm going to be ready. Ive started attending more of the chapter events and hopefully the members will remember my face because my last name is one you can't forgot.
DeleteI just want to remind you that this rejection is no reflection of you as a person. I don't know you, but I know that you are beautiful and you have a lot to offer the world! There are so many factors that go into people being chosen for membership in these organizations, but your WORTH is not one of those factors! I'm glad you are going to focus on taking care of yourself and protecting your peace during this time.

ReplyDeleteMy sister is a Delta and although she was pushing me to follow her footsteps, I had to follow my heart and her organization was not in my heart. This is why I love this blog so much. Although the author is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., she structured this blog to fit everyone's needs such as myself and for that, I can't thank you enough.
I have been following this blog since I was 12 and every advice that was given I followed to a "t". It was very helpful to me and now I can't believe I in a few months I will finally become a member of the org of my choice. With that being said, I would advise that all of you keep the faith and do not give up.

ReplyDeleteI literally attended zero events - 1 if you count Rush. You're not the only one. What I'm about to say reminds me of the movie "He's Just Not that Into You". There's a line that's something like "people always tell you their stories, but those stories are the exception to the rule"...
DeleteBut anyway, my friend was brand new to a city, attended Rush for a huge chapter where she didn't know anyone, and made the line. This was more than 10 years ago now so a lot has changed. But I hear all the time (and I've seen on this blog) ladies who don't know anyone in the chapter, but had a stellar packet and interview & were selected. I hope the odds are in our favor!
Here is a question that I have for the both of you. Why are you interested in joining the organization? Why this particular chapter? I am just curious. Most people who are interested in becoming members generally show interests by showing up to events, performing community service with the chapter, or just showing overall support. What I have found is people who have been chosen in the past, that haven't haven't supported events in the past, disappear after they cross. No Shade, I am just wondering why even bother if you are not willing to put the work in beforehand. People who from the outside have no idea the hard work and dedication that goes into running a successful chapter.

@4:02PM, I cannot answer for anyone else and I definitely understand your issue. For me personally, I did attend events for a while with a different chapter. Something happened that caused me to not do the process so it turned me away from the org for a while. I ran and hid, which isn't good, but it's the truth. Meanwhile, I continued with my other community service work. I attended a couple of chapter events over the next several years but wasn't consistent. When I found out about Rush, I figured why not try. I knew what I could bring to the table. Since then, I have been very active in my chapter.
DeleteMy friend that is applying, I know personally how active she has been in other community service orgs so I recommended to her that she try. I know that she is interested in the the org and would be a hard worker.
All of that to say, I think that people want to support the org but for whatever reason don't. However, they are off putting in hard work for other orgs and bring that to that table. Yet, I definitely suggest to people to attend the events. Support us and get to know the chapter members. It's a win-win situation for both parties especially when it's time for that chapter vote.
